黄金保值，指的是自古以来人们对黄金价格的高度认可，因为黄金蕴含着很高的内在价值，也就是开采黄金所投入的劳动量。再有，黄金便于携带和隐藏，不像房地产那样是不动产。
中国有句古话：“盛世藏古董，乱世买黄金。”不少中国人的思维被这句古话所禁锢，认为黄金的保值性不可置疑，即使在“兵荒马乱”时期，投资黄金也可避免财富损失。
黄金是一种稀有的贵金属，据沃伦•巴菲特估算，全世界所有开采出来的黄金也只能填满一个边长20米的立方体。因此，无论在哪里发现的黄金都会被人们珍藏起来。拥有大量黄金的帝国都曾经是历史的主宰者，其中就包括古罗马、西班牙、近现代的英国和当代美国（还有越来越显露出这个特质的中国）。
从各国政府每年都在增持黄金储备便可了解到黄金的保值性，其一原因是黄金作为以美元计价的替代货币，身为与美元呈负相关最大的资产，黄金具有对冲的优势。其二原因是黄金作为一种硬性的大宗商品，不会因为通胀而影响其内在价值。历史过程中凡出现纸质货币的贬值导致其价值尺度缺失，黄金价值总是会上涨，另外供应的有限性保证了黄金价值的相对稳定。
